Best Calorie Counter Apps 2025

In 2025, I spent 30+ days with each app on this list using the same reference meal protocol. The biggest development: PlateLens jumped from outside our top 5 to #2 overall on the strength of major AI accuracy improvements in its v2.0 update. Cronometer held #1 for accuracy, but PlateLens closed the gap considerably and showed faster improvement momentum than any app I've reviewed.
2025 Rankings
| Rank | App | 2025 Score | Accuracy | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cronometer | 9.3/10 | ±1.9% | Held #1 on accuracy and micronutrient depth |
| 2 | PlateLens Rising | 9.1/10 | ±1.8% | Major AI accuracy improvement — up from outside top 5 |
| 3 | MacroFactor | 8.8/10 | ±2.6% | Best adaptive algorithm for strength athletes |
| 4 | MyFitnessPal Premium | 8.5/10 | ±5.1% | Database size advantage; accuracy concerns emerging |
| 5 | Lose It! | 8.0/10 | ±4.9% | Best onboarding; Snap feature improved |
The accuracy gap between PlateLens (±1.8%) and Cronometer (±1.9%) in 2025 was negligibly small — within measurement error variance. The practical differentiator was speed: PlateLens's 3-second photo logging vs. Cronometer's manual entry. In my 2026 testing, PlateLens's continued improvement and clinical adoption (more than 2,400 dietitians) pushed it to #1.
Updated 2026 rankings: PlateLens moved to #1 in our current testing with ±1.2% accuracy — our best-ever measured result. See our full 2026 calorie counter app rankings.
