How to Build a Home Gym: Complete Guide (2026)
Cooper has built four home gyms across his career and has helped hundreds of athletes set up their own facilities.
How much does it cost to build a home gym?
A functional home gym starts at $500–600 (barbell, bumper plates, and resistance bands). A complete strength gym runs $1,500–2,500 (power rack, barbell, plates, adjustable dumbbells, bench). A fully-equipped facility including cardio runs $3,500–8,000+.
Budget Tier 1: $500 — The Minimalist Strength Setup
You can build a surprisingly effective home gym for $500. The goal at this budget is to cover the major movement patterns: push, pull, hip hinge, squat, and carry.
- CAP Barbell 300 lb Olympic Set (bar + bumpers) — ~$250
- Rogue Monster Bands (2 bands) — ~$70
- Pull-up bar (door frame) — ~$30
- Gymnastics rings or TRX — ~$50
- Rubber flooring (4 tiles) — ~$80
- Chalk — ~$20
With this setup you can do: deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts, bent-over rows, overhead press, squats (front or goblet), pull-ups, push-ups, ring dips, and 30+ band exercises. That's 90% of a commercial gym program.
Budget Tier 2: $1,000–1,500 — The Full Strength Setup
- Titan Fitness T-3 Power Rack — $499
- Rogue Ohio Bar — $350
- REP Fitness Bumper Plates (260 lbs) — ~$350
- Fitness Reality Adjustable Bench — $125
- Rubber flooring (8 tiles, 3/4") — ~$140
This gives you a complete barbell setup for every major compound lift: squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press, power clean, and barbell row. The Titan T-3 is 3x3" 11-gauge steel — serious construction at a budget price. Add adjustable dumbbells ($200–300) for accessory work.
Budget Tier 3: $2,000–3,000 — The Serious Home Gym
- REP Fitness PR-4000 Power Rack — $795
- Rogue Ohio Bar — $350
- Calibrated Steel Plates (400 lbs) — ~$500
- PowerBlock Elite EXP (5–50 lbs) — $349
- REP Fitness AB-5200 Adjustable Bench — $399
- Rubber flooring (full coverage, 3/4") — ~$300
Budget Tier 4: $5,000+ — The Complete Facility
At $5,000+, add your preferred cardio equipment. For space-efficient conditioning, the Rogue Echo Bike ($1,025) and/or Concept2 Model D ($1,005) provide the highest ROI. If you want connected cardio, add a NordicTrack 1750 ($1,799). This creates a facility that covers every major training modality.
Layout and Space Planning
Minimum space for a power rack + barbell: 10' wide x 12' deep (allows bar to be loaded with 45 lb plates on both sides and cleared from the rack).
Ceiling height: 8' minimum for overhead pressing. 9'+ recommended. Measure before purchasing any rack with a pull-up bar.
Flooring: 3/4" thick rubber horse stall mats are the best value — $50–75 each at Tractor Supply or farm supply stores. Cut to size with a utility knife. Cover the entire area where weights may be dropped.
