Our Testing Methodology
We believe the fitness equipment review space has a honesty problem: most reviews are written after minimal real-world use, often with free products provided by manufacturers. Our methodology is designed to be the opposite of that. Here's exactly how we test.
Equipment Testing
How We Test: All equipment is purchased at retail prices, tested in our Denver facility under real training conditions for a minimum of 4 weeks (most are in active use for 12+ months). We evaluate across four dimensions: durability (does it hold up to heavy use?), performance (does it work as claimed?), value (is it worth the price?), and user experience (is it practical for home gym use?).
Barbells
- Shaft flex measured via dial indicator at 225, 315, 405, and 495 lbs
- Knurl density measured in ridges per cm²
- Sleeve spin timed with standardized test (30-second hang test, 5-second point-load test)
- Load capacity tested by progressively loading to rated max with dead-lift loading
- Finish durability assessed after 6 months of chalk use and drops
Power Racks
- Upright flex measured at rated capacity with dead-hang load
- Weld quality assessed by certified welder inspection
- J-cup wobble measured with laser level at each position
- Safety bar load testing at rated capacity
- Long-term use assessment (12+ months minimum in facility)
Cardio Equipment
- Motor heat testing: sustained high-speed sessions measuring motor temperature
- Belt measurements verified against stated dimensions
- Incline accuracy tested with angle measurement tool
- Noise measured with calibrated sound meter at 1m distance
- Miles logged and tracked for durability assessment
App Testing (Nutrition & Workout Apps)
Calorie App Accuracy Testing: Dr. Megan Torres, RDN, tests each app over 30 days using 20 standardized reference meals with caloric values verified through bomb calorimetry at a partner laboratory. Accuracy is reported as mean variance percentage from lab values. Our nutrition testing methodology aligns with published benchmarks from Nutrition Research Review.
- 30-day minimum testing period per app
- Accuracy benchmarked against bomb calorimetry reference values
- Food database breadth tested with standardized food list (200 items across categories)
- Photo logging accuracy tested with reference meals
- User experience evaluated on iOS and Android
Supplement Testing
- Ingredient quality assessed against published research on effective doses
- Third-party certification status verified (Informed Sport, NSF, Labdoor, etc.)
- Label accuracy vs. known reference values where available
- Taste and mixability evaluated across team members
- Price per gram of protein or active ingredient calculated for value comparison
