3+ Years of Daily Use

Our PowerBlock Elite EXP set arrived in late 2022. Since then, they've been used 4–5 days per week for dumbbell pressing, rows, curls, lateral raises, and incline dumbbell work. After 3+ years, the selector pin mechanism is as smooth as the day it arrived. Zero mechanical failures.

The 2-second weight change is accurate — pull the pin out, insert at new weight, press in. Compare that to Bowflex SelectTech's 5–7 second dial rotation. In a superset workout where you're switching weights between sets, the difference adds up. Over a 45-minute dumbbell workout with 15 weight changes, PowerBlock saves approximately 45 seconds vs. Bowflex. Marginal, but real.

The square block shape is the main design compromise. For overhead pressing, tricep extensions, and any movement where the dumbbell needs to rest on your knee to kick up — the square shape is less natural than a traditional dumbbell. It's an acceptable trade-off for the space savings (a 5–50 lb set in a 10" x 12" footprint) but it does affect feel.

Pros
  • 2-second weight change — fastest mechanism available
  • 3+ years daily use — zero mechanical failures
  • Expandable to 90 lbs per hand
  • Urethane coating holds up to heavy use
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Compact 10x12 inch footprint per pair
Cons
  • × Square block shape less natural than traditional dumbbells
  • × Cannot be dropped — mechanism will break
  • × Overhead and awkward positions less comfortable

Verdict: The PowerBlock Elite EXP is the best adjustable dumbbell for space-constrained home gyms. 3+ years of failure-free use earns our confidence. If you do a lot of overhead work and prefer a traditional dumbbell feel, the Ironmaster Quick-Lock is worth considering. See our full dumbbell comparison.
